I've changed my review to four starts.
It works, but a bit tricky way.
First I have to start ESP8266 in normal mode (GPIO0 and GPIO2 to H level) and change GPIO0 to L level and restart. From that point uploading the firmware works.
I missed to put GPIO2 to H.
Of course, I have to use external breadboard to change the GPIO levels.

I ordered this module to upload my program using Arduino IDE.
The delivery was fast and panel was well wrapped.

"Selectable working mode: On-board toggle switch. UART side for serial TTL debugging by AT commands, PROG for firmware programming"
Unfortunately I cannot upload the firmware because the switch is missing. The guy explains it here: http://www.arjunsk.com/iot/programming-esp8266-esp-01-using-esp8266-programmer-ch340g-chip-adapter/

I tried a "hack" from the link above and used a breadboard to put GPIO0 to GND which is requirement to enter the ESP8266 to the flash mode but still I cannot upload the firmware and Arduino IDE reports the following error messages:
trying to connect
	espcomm_send_command: sending command header
	espcomm_send_command: sending command payload
warning: espcomm_sync failed
error: espcomm_open failed
error: espcomm_upload_mem failed

The USB to ESP8266 module can be recognized as /dev/ttyUSB0 and it works in normal mode on Ubuntu 16.04. It reacts on the AT commands:
$echo 'AT\r' > /dev/ttyUSB0 | cat /dev/ttyUSB0
AT\r

OK

Mainly I bought it because I want to upload the firmware but partially the module works hence I give two stars.
